Iran rules out diplomacy amid Israeli attacks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has declared that Iran will not engage in diplomatic negotiations with any party until the U.S.-backed Israeli military campaign against Iran ends and those responsible are held accountable.

Speaking to reporters after high-level talks with European officials at the United Nations’ (UN) European headquarters in Geneva on June 18, Araghchi stressed that Iran would only “consider diplomacy once again” after the cessation of hostilities and the imposition of consequences on Israel for its actions.

“Iran is ready to consider diplomacy once the aggression is stopped and the aggressor is held accountable for the crimes committed,” Araghchi said, adding that Iran “will continue to exercise its legitimate right to self-defense.” (Related: Iran calls ballistic missile attack response on Israel “legal, rational and legitimate.”)

The foreign minister condemned the “armed attacks” on Iranian nuclear facilities, calling them a violation of international law.

“Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful and has always been under the IAEA safeguards and monitoring. Hence, armed attacks against safeguarded nuclear facilities by a regime which is not a party to any WMD treaties is a serious crime and violation of international law,” he added.

Araghchi also expressed frustration with the European Union and the E3 nations, including Germany, the U.K. and France over their failure to condemn Israeli airstrikes, which he said were the catalyst for the current crisis.

“In this regard, I made it crystal clear that Iran’s defense capabilities are not negotiable,” Araghchi emphasized. Nevertheless, he noted that Iran “supports the continuation” of technical and diplomatic talks with the EU and the E3.

Araghchi accuses Israeli government of committing “grave war crimes”

Before the press conference, Araghchi already denounced the U.S.-Israeli military campaign as “a betrayal of diplomacy,” accusing the Israeli government of committing “grave war crimes” by targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities – actions he emphasized are “explicitly prohibited under international law.”

“We were attacked in the midst of an ongoing diplomatic process,” Araghchi said at the UN Human Rights Council ahead of the Geneva talks with European foreign ministers, adding that a planned June 15 meeting with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Oman was abruptly canceled following the Israeli strikes.

“We were supposed to meet with the Americans on June 15 to craft a very promising agreement for peaceful resolution of the issues fabricated over our peaceful nuclear program. It was a betrayal of diplomacy and unprecedented blow to the foundations of international law,” he added.

Araghchi also raised alarms over the potential environmental and humanitarian risks posed by attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. “Attacks on nuclear facilities are grave war crimes,” he told the Council. He then urged the international community to take a firm stand. “Iran rightfully expects each and every one of you to stand for justice and the rule of law,” he said, calling for global accountability over what he described as blatant violations of sovereignty and peace.
